Two 14-year-old schoolchildren have become Britain’s youngest ever parents, it was revealed last night.
April Webster gave birth to son Jamie after unprotected sex with her boyfriend, Nathan Fishbourne, when they were just 13.
The pair, from Caerphilly, south Wales, have joined a growing army of child parents now juggling schoolwork with baby care.
Newborn: Jamie Fishbourne is the child of Britain's youngest ever parents, both aged just 14
The youngster discovered she was expecting the day before her 14th birthday and the baby was born via Caesarean section weighing 8lb 14 oz on November 15.
The pair began dating in September last year but were ‘too embarrassed’ to tell their parents they were having sex – or to ask for advice.
Nathan, who has vowed to be a good father, said he used a condom once but did not like it.
Four-week old Jamie is currently living at the home of April and her parents, Maria, 36, and Jeff, 38, while the youngster prepares to continue her schooling.
The young mum and her baby share a room with older sister, Robyn, 17, who is helping with bottle-feeding.Nathan hopes to have the baby at the weekends, but custody arrangements have caused arguments between the young couple. It is uncertain whether they will stay together, as they are undergoing a ‘cooling off period’.
‘I’ve not thought about our future yet as that’s a long way off,’ Nathan told The Sun.
‘I’m happy to be a dad. When I see Jamie I do things for him, just like any dad. I help change him and stuff.’
The pair met when they were 13 and in the same year at St Cenydd school – living only a couple of miles apart.
The pregnancy ran smoothly, although Jamie was born with a malformed oesophagus which hampered his feeding.
After an operation and 11 days in hospital, he was declared healthy and allowed home.
Mrs Webster, April’s mother, said: ‘It was a big shock at first but we let April make the decision on whether to go through with it.
‘Now he has arrived we’re glad she did. He’s my first grandson and so beautiful.’
Mr Webster, a cab-driver, added: ‘April’s still my little girl and now she’s got a little baby. She’s already doing so much for Jamie. We’re really proud at how she has taken to motherhood.’
He said he felt no hostility towards Nathan, adding: ‘It takes two to tango.’
Nathan’s parents, Julie, 43, and Ron, 53, a retired trucker, said they were angry with their son at first but were now excited about the new arrival to the family.
April, a diabetic, is now continuing her schooling at young mums’ centre.
Last year, a 13-year-old boy from Sussex thought he had become Britain’s youngest father when his girlfriend, Chantelle Stedman, 15, gave birth.
However, DNA results later revealed that baby Maisie’s biological father was another teenager aged 15.
